Abstract

The paper sheds light on the types and functions of vague and ambiguous language in President Tinubu’s 2023 inaugural address to the nation which forms the data for the study. The analysis was carried out using insight from the concepts of vagueness and ambiguity in semantics. Findings reveal that vague expressions in the speech are meant to: make Nigerians feel happy and hopeful; make Nigerians have pride in their country; achieve tact or save the face of some people; achieve mass mobilisation or support, etc. For ambiguous expressions in the speech, their functions include creating a sense of belonging or shared value and achieving tact.
